The HDMI standard continuously keeps on evolving, thus pushing the High definition experience to much higher levels both at home and on the road. This in turn has created a large untapped market for quality equipments that will support the new technology. The young at heart , tech savvy or just ordinary people who demand more from their native home equipments are the main consumers of HDMI technology; The availability of large bandwidth has also contributed greatly towards these developments. There are new very exciting features that are enjoined with the new HDMI 2.0, they include but are not limited to the following;
It offers backward compatibility; it is thereby compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI specifications that most clients may already be enjoying. HDMI 2.0 adds some key enhancements that support the continuous improvement of consumer audio and video experience. Its connector has also remained unchanged; this opens the HDMI 2.0 technology to a myriad of uses and devices that were previously using other available technologies. The technology does not define any new cabling or connector requirements to its new users.
HDMI 2.0 does significantly increase available bandwidth to a staggering 18Gbps; this allows it to comfortably carry the 3840 x 2160 resolution video at mind boggling speeds of 60fps. This bandwidth increase does not call for any change in cables either; the high speed Cat 2 wires can handle the new advancements in the bandwidth comfortably without degrading quality.
HDMI 2.0 offers higher resolution by offering support for 4k @ 50/60 (2160 p) technology. This refers to 4000 pixels wide by 2000 pixels high. The normal 1080p systems are thus quadrupled. This covers two formats that are both supported by the HDMI 2.0 namely 3840 p wide by 2160 p high and 4096 p wide by 2160 high. Thus high end home theatre systems will offer the kind of quality projectors of Digital Cinema offer; the high bandwidth requirement notwithstanding.
To provide customers with a multi-dimensional and fully immersive audio experience, the new HDMI 2.0 offers up to 32 audio channels; these channels offer impressive voice quality that is currently unparalleled in the market. It can also offer an audio sample frequency of up to 1536 kHz for complete audio fidelity client requirements. It also does support the highly popular wide angle theatrical video aspect ratio of 21.9.
With HDMI 2.0, multiple users utilizing a single screen can be able to get a simultaneous delivery of dual streams of video from different sources; all these without compromising on the quality of either stream being displayed. It can also provide simultaneous delivery of high quality multi stream audio to a group of up to 4 members. Both the video and audio streams can further be dynamically synchronized so as to provide that uninterrupted, lag-free transmission of both audio and video; they have aptly named this phenomenon as “dynamic auto lipsync”
The CEC extensions that have been implemented do provide for an expanded control and command of consumer electronic components and devices through one single control point; this makes updates, improvements and compatibility easy and much cheaper to implement. Going by the rave reviews that this technology has received since it's introduction and keeping in mind the stellar performance its predecessors have achieved over the years; HDMI 2.0 is bound to positively impact the video and audio arena in the foreseeable future.
